Public Transit In Hillsborough County Is More Popular During These Tough Economic Times

The numbers show an upswing in bus service for Hillsborough Area Regional Transit. A report for the month of February shows HART's bus service experienced a significant increase, of nearly 2.5%, for the first time since December 2008.
There is also a huge increase in HART's U-Pass program, which is up 28% from last year this time. U-Pass allows University of South Florida students to ride HART's local connector and limited express bus routes for free. It also allows faculty and staff to use the service at a cost of 25 cents.
In addition, HART's Paratransit service experienced a 3% increase for the first time since December 2008. Paratransit is a service offered to Hillsborough County residents with physical, cognitive, visual or other disabilities, who are unable to use HART's local fixed route service. This service gives those individuals the freedom to get to work, school, medical appointments and to run errands as needed.
Budget shortfalls and drops in ridership have forced transit agencies across the country to drastically cut service. However, that is not the case in Hillsborough County, where many residents are forced to do more with less and are cutting costs through the use of public transit.
