HART Adds more buses to Fleet
HART's striking new blue-and-white buses are taking to Hillsborough County's streets with a squeaky clean look and curb-level floors designed for maximum ease in passenger boarding.
Seven heavy-duty buses that arrived this week are part of 29 being delivered through mid-March. Thirty of the new buses went into service in August-September, bringing the total of new buses to 59 out of a total fleet of 202 buses.
The new 40-foot long, 37-passenger buses hold 12 more seated passengers than the oldest buses being retired. All are equipped with wheelchair lifts and designed to be fully accessible for people with disabilities. Each bus can also carry up to two bicycles on a rack upfront.
The new buses, made by Gillig Corp. of Hayward, CA, are powered by diesel engines that emit fewer exhaust emissions through the use of new diesel particulate filters, and are more fuel-efficient than the older buses they replace.
The buses were purchased with about $7 million in federal funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. HART was granted a total of $15.1 million under ARRA, which is being used for various capital purchases and construction projects that will help improve the transit system and provide investment in the local economy.
