HART HighLights Growing Ridership, Digital Presence and Apta Award Celebration

June 7, 2010, Tampa, FL - Expand and enhance, that was the theme for today's HART Board meeting.  HART Board Chair Ron Govin noted that one of the Rapid Transit Investment Plan's (RTIP) greatest benefits is the improvement in existing service.  Chairman Govin spoke on how Route No. 1's ridership, through extended hours and improved frequency, gained 28.5% over the previous year.  Overall, HART services are up nearly 12% from May 2009.  This shows the commitment Hillsborough County residents are willing to make to mass transit.

Also on the agenda, the HART Board approved measures today that will enhance HART's overall customer experience.  The Board approved a funding allocation for new ticket vending machines and authorized funding towards the development and maintenance of existing Park and Ride Facilities.  The first of the measures will expedite the boarding process on the streetcar, facilitating more timely service.  The second measure will provide HART customers with more modern and efficient facilities.

The Board of Directors also received a detailed look at HART's emerging online presence.  Katharine Eagan, Chief of Service Development, gave a presentation on how HART is positioning itself in the digital media world and why digital media is important to HART's message.  Director Michael York applauded HART for this position and emphasized the importance of using social media as an additional outlet in getting HART's message out.

Chairman Govin congratulated HART on being awarded the 2010 Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA.)  It was the first time the Board was able to officially recognize HART for the prestigious award.
